Setting Up a Home Office on a Budget: What's Worth It (and What's Not)

A good home office isn't about looking like a tech ad. It's about protecting your back, your eyes, and your attention — for as little money as possible. Here's where your budget actually matters.

Spend on: the chair and desk height

You sit here for hours, so ergonomics come first. A supportive chair and a desk at the right height (elbows around 90°, screen near eye level) prevent the aches that derail your day. A second-hand quality chair often beats a new cheap one.

Spend on: your screen and light

Raising your laptop to eye level (a stand, or even a stack of books) plus an external keyboard saves your neck. Good lighting — ideally natural, plus a simple desk lamp — reduces eye strain more than any pricey monitor.

Skip (for now): the expensive extras

Nice, not necessary: premium mechanical keyboards, ultrawide monitors, smart lighting, and desk "aesthetics". They're fine once you're comfortable, but they don't make you work better on day one.

The cheapest upgrade of all

Movement. Standing up, stretching, and looking away from the screen regularly does more for comfort and focus than most gear. It's free — and it's the thing people skip.

Frequently asked questions

What do you actually need for a home office? +
At minimum: a comfortable chair, a desk at the right height, your screen near eye level, and decent lighting. Those four cover comfort and focus; everything else is optional.
Is it worth buying an expensive office chair? +
Ergonomics matter because you sit for hours, but you don't need the most expensive model. A supportive chair — even second-hand — is one of the best-value upgrades.
How can I set up a home office cheaply? +
Prioritize chair, desk height, screen position, and light. Use a stand or books to raise your laptop, add a cheap external keyboard, and skip premium extras until later.
