Before you assume you need a new laptop, try these free steps in order. Most slowdowns come from clutter and background clog, not failing hardware.

1. Restart (properly)

Not sleep — a full restart. It clears memory and background processes, and fixes a surprising share of "my laptop is slow" complaints.

2. Trim startup apps

Programs that launch at boot quietly eat resources. Disabling the ones you don't need immediately makes startup and everyday use snappier.

3. Free up disk space

A nearly full drive slows everything down. Clear temporary files, empty the trash, and remove large things you don't need.

4. Tame the browser

Dozens of open tabs and unused extensions are a classic hidden cause. Close tabs, remove extensions you don't use, and keep the browser updated.

5. Update and scan

Install pending system updates, and run a reputable malware scan — malware is a common, overlooked cause of sluggishness.

Only then, hardware: if it's still slow after all that, an SSD upgrade or more RAM can transform an older machine — often cheaper than replacing it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my laptop so slow all of a sudden? +
Common causes are too many startup and background apps, a nearly full drive, an overloaded browser, pending updates, or malware — usually clutter rather than failing hardware.
How can I speed up my laptop for free? +
Restart fully, disable unnecessary startup apps, free up disk space, close excess browser tabs and extensions, install updates, and run a malware scan — in that order.
Is it worth upgrading an old laptop? +
Often yes. If free fixes don't help, adding an SSD or more RAM can dramatically speed up an older laptop, usually for far less than a new machine.
